In Matthew 24, the disciples asked Jesus, “When shall these things happen, and what will be signs of your coming and of the end of the world?” Jesus responded by listing many things that would happen prior to His return. He talks about a time of great distress in the earth where nations are at war with one another, famines and pestilences will be on the earth, and earthquakes in various places. He calls these the “Beginning of Sorrows”. He then goes on to identify a period known as the “Great Tribulation” that will be worse than at any other time in all of human history, and worse than there ever will be again. This is a three-and-a-half year period of time beginning when the Anti-Christ claims that he is God on the Third Jewish Temple (for more information, please review the Anti-Christ Section and the Third Jewish Temple sections).
When does will this time begin? We are not entirely sure. There is much speculation about when this will begin, and no one can say for sure. We do know a couple of things. It will be when the Anti-Christ claims that he is God in the temple, and we know that this event will be 3.5 years from an event called the “confirmation of the covenant” (see the Israel Peace treaty section).
We know many things about this period of time. We know that the Anti-Christ is going to declare “war” on the saints of Christ and will prevail against them for a while. We know that Christians will be beheaded for their faith, and that all people will be forced to take something the Bible calls the “Mark of the Beast” where no person will be able to buy or sell unless they take this mark. This period of time will be worse than the Nazi era and the gassing of the Jewish people. In fact, this period will be so bad that the Bible says no flesh would survive if God did not cut the days short. We must be prepared spiritually for the things to come because this period is probably just a few years away now. Trust in the Lord and He will guide you through this period. For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. (Matthew 24:21)
